Desde o come\u00e7o \u00e9 demonstrado que essa \u00e9 uma fam\u00edlia problem\u00e1tica, e a pr\u00f3pria mudan\u00e7a para Nathgari aconteceu para que escapasse de algo feito na cidade anterior pela filha mais velha, Lily (Maddison Brown). Todos odeiam o lugar para onde se exilaram e, certa noite, Lily e seu irm\u00e3o ca\u00e7ula, Tommy (Nicholas Hamilton), saem para perambular. O pai, Matthew (Joseph Fiennes), v\u00ea os adolescentes deixando a casa e n\u00e3o faz nada.<\/p>\n<p>Na manh\u00e3 seguinte, ambos est\u00e3o desaparecidos. N\u00e3o dormiram em casa nem foram \u00e0 escola e Catherine (Nicole Kidman), a m\u00e3e, \u00e9 informada de que eles n\u00e3o v\u00eam frequentando as aulas. Uma tempestade de areia se aproxima e, desesperada para encontrar as crian\u00e7as, ela pede ajuda ao marido, que se mostra um pouco indiferente. Para ele, \u00e9 mais importante manter as apar\u00eancias de fam\u00edlia funcional do que admitir que os filhos fugiram de casa e est\u00e3o desaparecidos. Fica claro que a relut\u00e2ncia do pai se deve ao fato de Lily j\u00e1 ter sumido anteriormente e causado esc\u00e2ndalos; mas talvez o que realmente deixe o casal preocupado \u00e9 Tom ter sumido com ela dessa vez.<\/p>\n<p>Se eles tiverem se perdido no deserto, a temperatura n\u00e3o permitir\u00e1 que sobrevivam muitos dias sem \u00e1gua. O pai n\u00e3o acredita muito nessa possibilidade, crendo que a filha ser\u00e1 encontrada com um homem qualquer, tendo arrastado Tom junto com ela.<\/p>\n<p>O desaparecimento vai ficando mais complicado \u00e0 medida que as investiga\u00e7\u00f5es da pol\u00edcia progridem. Lily era uma jovem de 15 anos bastante prom\u00edscua, j\u00e1 tendo se envolvido sexualmente com v\u00e1rios jovens da cidade.
