- How did Ten Second songs start? Where does this idea come from? Have you always followed the same pattern of choosing a song and using different styles?
It all started a custom songs business I launched on Fiverr.com – and I sold songs, 10 seconds in length in multiple styles depending on what the client wanted. And I would sing birthday greetings, inside joke messages to friends, marriage proposals and even jingles for online businesses. It was wild lol … So, that’s how the name came about “Ten Second Songs“… Then when I decided to promote my business on YouTube I became a YouTube sensation seemingly overnight with my first viral hit “Dark Horse”. the rest is history.
- How is the recording process? Who does the video editing?
The recording process is both a satisfying experience and a living hell (lol). I’m not a trained musician so when fans tell me to produce in styles. I’m not familiar with, it can be quite challenging to figure it out. But I get through it and it makes me a slightly better musician afterwards.
There’s not much to edit with the videos apart from putting style names, I do the video in one take. But I recently passed off whatever little editing duties I have to my bassist, Derek. Derek is the bassist for my band set the charge and he’s tech savvy. He’s good to have around!
- What is your professional background? How many instruments do you play?
I’m just a regular guy from New York who taught himself to sing and play. I had 1 year of bass guitar lessons when I was 11, then everything was self-taught from there. I still don’t know jack. LOL
On the other hand, I did go through an online course for singing with my mentor Ken Tamplin. His course is KTVA (Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy) and he’s taught me a lot. I wouldn’t have access to the range I have now without him and his technique.
I primarily sing, everything else is either programmed by myself or played by me. I play piano when I need to, bass when I need to and same with guitar. But when I actually need GOOD guitar work I’ll call some of my YouTube buddies like Eric Calderone (e Rock) or Leo from frog leap studios. LOL
- You can sing in the style and voice of different singers, how have you found it? Was it something you used to do? What is your favorite performance?
I found I can sing in different styles through trial and error and never turning down a job. If I didn’t know how to do something I challenged myself to figure it out and I did it :). My favorite performance is Queen’s LIVE AID performance. Legendary.
If you were asking which of MINE is my favorite performance? I would have to say the best is yet to come 😉
- We have seen that you choose a song and sing it into 20 different styles on your Youtube channel. And also, that you choose another song and perform it in a single style. How are the songs and styles chosen? Are there many rejected materials that people do not see on your videos? Some you have not approved?
I usually choose what’s trending at the moment or fan requests. There have been times I tried styles that I ended up scrapping. When I did “Heathens”, a “cascada” style almost made it on the video but it sounded awful to me (as seen on my Behind the Scenes video).
- Have you already had any feedback from a singer/band you performed?
Yes. Corey Taylor from Slipknot tweeted out “Dark Horse”; Tech n9ne gave me props; Nick Sixx has shared my videos; Type O Negative and Boyz II Men tweeted at me. To name a few.
- What are your preferences considering music? Do you know any Brazilian song/band/singer?
I’m all over the place musically but I tend to love classic rock and metal ie – Queen and Iron Maiden, I love doom metal and goth – Type O Negative, Candlemass and Ghost… I love 50s music, trip hop, 90s alternative, 90s music in general … Ah. too much. lol
I’m not familiar with too many Brazilian singers but I’m open to listening suggestions! I do love me some Bossa Nova, it’s very relaxing.
- The project 65 SONGS – A JOURNEY THROUGH ROCK ‘N’ ROLL was amazing. How did you come up with the idea of working with Ken Tamplin and Gunčíková? How was the development and execution of this project?
Me and Ken had talked about the idea for a while and we finally developed it, and it was a good thing we did because we were all very happy with how it came out. That was probably one of my favorite videos I did in 2016.
- About your band Set the Charge, tell us more about it and the relation to Ten Second Songs.
Okay, so Set the Charge is a name that I have been releasing original music under since 2008 but it just recently became a band in 2014. And we are working on a debut full length album to be released in 2017. We have had some minor releases since our formation but nothing like what we’re about to drop.
My band mates are supporters of the Ten Second Songs channel and have even helped me perform Ten Second Songs live at Vidcon. They’re cool like that.
